Our five health, safety & wellbeing basics
Nothing is more important to Kier than the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our people. Which is why, wherever our employees work and whatever they do, they are given the time, the training and the tools to concentrate on our five safety, health and wellbeing basics:
Safe in our hands
At Kier, keeping our people out of harm's way is far more than just encouraging words or one-off campaigns. A few years ago, we set ourselves a challenge to become industry leaders regarding safety and wellbeing and as a result have now successfully embedded a fully integrated safety-first culture throughout all that we do.
This approach now permeates into every environment, at every level and in every discipline of our organisation. We expect similar standards from our partners and supply chain as well.
A spotlight on
Strong visible leadership
A key element of our drive to improve safety and wellbeing is strong visible leadership. We have developed a structured programme of regular visits by senior leaders, directors and senior managers to our contracts / projects and depots.
By engaging with our teams on the front line, we find this also provides a great way to test the temperature of the business at the operational face while making people feel valued and recognised.
Striving to do better
Despite our achievements, we are not complacent, and we are constantly striving to improve further. Last year, Kier provided 3,891 days of core SHE training to accredited industry standards for 1,771 staff. This is in addition to task and occupation based SHE (safety, health and environment) training across the Group.
At Board, business unit and site level, SHE committees consult on SHE matters, monitor performance and share best practice. Our teams and dedicated SHE professionals work together to agree objectives and targets that contribute to Kier's strategy for a sugoodstainable business.
