Kier Living site manager, Matt Richardson, accompanied Kieran and ran the fun session. The children, aged six and seven, were asked to identify safety equipment and Kieran demonstrated PPE (personal protective equipment) and handed out hard hats for them to try on. They were asked to think about all the possible hazards there might be on a building site and how important it is never to enter one on their own. Matt also explained how important it is for builders to protect the environment and he asked the pupils to help him position a hedgehog box.

“It is vitally important to get the health & safety message across to children as early as possible,” said Matt, “and we are delighted to welcome the children from Biscovey Nursery and Infant School to meet Kieran. His appearance always makes a big impression and the event is a brilliant way to make the health & safety message really memorable.”

Acting assistant head teacher, Vicky French, commented: “This is a great way for the children to learn about building sites and fits in perfectly with our project on houses and homes where we have been learning about all types of housing. The key message was about health & safety but the children really enjoyed helping the hedgehogs find a safe home too. We plan to continue this part of the project when we return to school and learn more about animal homes.”

Matt Ward, Devon and Cornwall Housing’s development manager, added: “Devon & Cornwall Housing is really pleased to have the opportunity to work with Biscovey School and to assist in educating children about the dangers of construction sites. Their visit is also a great opportunity for them to learn more about how we build houses and I’m sure they will enjoy being on site with Kieran.”
